After a 4-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets Wednesday night, the Ottawa Senators have lost five straight and played themselves out of a playoff spot. With injuries to Josh Norris, Shane Pinto, Brady Tkachuk and Linus Ullmark not playing at 100 percent, some are wondering if it will be an eight straight season the Senators miss the playoffs.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss the Senators’ recent losing streak and if their playoff hopes are slipping away.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Nobody’s gonna sit here and blame the Sens for losing to the red-hot Jets, especially if you don’t have three of your top forwards in Brady Tkachuk, Josh Norris and Shane Pinto.
But we talked earlier in the week about how with all those teams in the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff push, you’re a good 10 days from separating yourself, and you’re a bad 10 days from putting yourself well behind the 8-ball. Right now, Ottawa is having a bad 10 days.
Frank Seravalli: Look, it certainly doesn’t help with the injury cloud covering them. Neither Tkachuk or Linus Ullmark are 100 percent, and it’s crunch time. It feels like it’s been that way all year, one thing after another for the Sens. I think the true feather in their cap is that they’ve stuck with it, but now they need to find a way to break through.
I’m not too concerned, I’m just wondering what the heck the Sens are going to do at the Trade Deadline. They’re in the same position as the Detroit Red Wings, meaning they’ve got to get in and have their players get a taste of the playoffs. You’ve got to be able to sell to free agents or players on the trade market that this is a destination, where you have a chance to win. They have to get in.
