Key NHL Matchups to Bet On This Week

  1. Carolina Hurricanes vs. Winnipeg Jets (Feb 4):
    • The Carolina Hurricanes started their February off on a sour note after losing to the Los Angeles Kings at home on Saturday. It was deflating for a team that went 10-3-2 in January and is clawing for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division. Currently, they are in second behind the Washington Capitals, but with the addition of superstar Mikko Rantanen, the Hurricanes are hardly an easy out, with many considering them a Stanley Cup-winning favorite.
    • They head north to the Chilly City where the league-leading Winnipeg Jets are flying high. Winnipeg recently took hold of the best record in the league after grinding it out an overtime win against the Capitals on Saturday. Coach Scott Arniel has his team rolling with a six-game winning streak, all without captain Adam Lowry, who has been on Injured Reserve. Stars Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele have points in four straight games, while Connor Hellebuyck is yet again the favorite to win the Vezina Trophy.
  2. Boston Bruins vs. New York Rangers (Feb 5):
    • Two Original Six teams square off at Madison Square Garden.
    • It’s been an incredibly peculiar year for the Boston Bruins, who fired their coach at the beginning of the season and are riding with Joe Sacco for the remainder of the year. Under Sacco, the Bruins are 18-13-3 and are looking to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Boston already beat the Rangers on Saturday at home, but for this matchup, it’s on the back end of a back-to-back (plays Minnesota on Tuesday) and the Bruins are 9-14-3 on the road.
    • Similarly, the Rangers have also had an uncharacteristic season. However, after trading for J.T. Miller, is the season outlook on the upswing? Before beating Vegas on Sunday, the Rangers lost three in a row and a playoff push looked bleak. After this win, New York has the perfect opportunity to ride the momentum and continue to sneak up on Boston in the playoff race where it’s currently six points out as of this writing.
  3. Vegas Golden Knights vs. New Jersey Devils (Feb 6):
    • Vegas is running through the Eastern Conference gauntlet and started with a 4-2 loss to the Rangers. Tonight, it takes on the Islanders, and to cap off its tri-state stay, the Knights play the Devils on Thursday. It’s been a rough go for them, losing eight of their last 10 games. Luckily, the Knights started their season red hot, giving them enough of a cushion to remain in contention for the Pacific Division crown. Perhaps with the 4 Nations Face-Off approaching, this downtrodden stretch came at the right time. Regardless, it’s still concerning.
    • New Jersey is in a similar situation where it began the year on a tear, but January was hardly kind to it, going 5-5-3. It hurts even more with goaltender Jacob Markstrom going down for 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL; forcing the Devils to turn to backup Jake Allen to carry the load. In a surprise to no one, Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt are keeping the Devils afloat, each with points in five straight contests, but is it sustainable?
    • With these squads each in a vulnerable position, who pulls ahead in Newark?
  4. Colorado Avalanche vs. Edmonton Oilers (Feb 7):
    • Last week, Connor McDavid took on fellow NHL superstar Auston Matthews. Now, he faces the NHL leader in points, Nathan MacKinnon.
    • The Colorado Avalanche had a difficult January, going 7-6-2 and that may seem fine. But it doesn’t fit with the level of excellence that many expect from a star-led team. Trading Rantanen definitely hurt, but receiving Martin Necas in return has already paid dividends. Since arriving in Denver, Necas has registered five points in five games and his connection with MacKinnon is already evident. Colorado will also be fresh off playing in Calgary the night before, and the Avs are 2-2 on the tail ends of back-to-backs.
    • Edmonton is sitting in a solid position and is tied for the lead in the Pacific Division with Vegas. McDavid’s co-star Leon Draisaitl is on an absolute tear this season, leading the NHL in goals with 36. Additionally, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Evan Bouchard are starting to get their scoring touch back, each with points in four of their last five games. Leading up to this game, the Oilers will have battled against the Blues and the Blackhawks before wrapping up the first half of the season. Additionally, Edmonton holds a significant advantage with a 2-0 record against the Avs this season.
  5. Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Vancouver Canucks (Feb 8):
    • To close out the first half of the season before the 4 Nations Face-Off, the Toronto Maple Leafs look to dominate the West Coast. It hasn’t been an easy stretch for the Leafs, going 4-6 in their last 10, and nearly coughing up a 3-0 lead against Edmonton. After the win in Edmonton, they face Calgary and Seattle before wrapping up in Vancouver. Luckily for Toronto, this down stretch isn’t drastic. It still has a decent enough cushion to let a few games slide and not lose enough ground in playoff positioning.
    • When the Canucks traded J.T. Miller, a collective sigh of relief was heard around the City of Glass. The rift that he and Elias Pettersson had caused in Vancouver’s locker room was getting messier by the minute and parting ways with Miller was probably the only real solution. Amidst all of the drama, the Canucks are still in a firm position to secure a playoff spot. Even though they lost to Detroit on Sunday and will have faced Colorado and San Jose, look for the Canucks to make a surge now that the drama is behind them.
  6. Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens (Feb 9):
    • As we prepare for Super Bowl festivities, there’s nothing wrong with starting the day with some NHL action.
    • Both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Montreal Canadiens are in similar situations. The Lightning currently hold the final playoff spot with 58 points, a far cry from a few years ago when they won back-to-back Stanley Cups. They’ll have already played three games this week with two against Ottawa and one this Saturday against Detroit, making this the back end of a back-to-back. Tampa hasn’t been great on the tail end of back-to-backs, posting a 3-4 record, as well as an 11-13-2 record on the road.
    • Montreal seems to have lost steam. Either that or teams are starting to figure the Habs out. They’re losers in three straight, and will also be coming off a game this upcoming Saturday, but the difference is, they’re nearly perfect on back-to-back finales with a 5-0-1 record. It remains to be seen if Montreal can come out unscathed though, given its recent poor stretch. Can it find a way back to the playoff race? Or will the Canadiens wither away back into the lottery?

Best Weekly NHL Betting Strategies

1. Player Prop Bets:

  • Focus on stars like McDavid, Pastrňák, and Crosby. Popular options include Player to score anytime or Over/Under points.
  • Example: Bet on McDavid to record Over 1.5 points in the Oilers’ games this week.

2. Over/Under Bets:

  • When expecting a higher score in a certain game, betting the over is an optimal choice. Alternative totals depending on what sportsbook is in use, are also available. However, depending on what total is chosen, expect the odds to change
  • Example: Carolina vs. Winnipeg’s total is 5.5 which is typically a barometer for a lower scoring game. However, if you have good reason and analysis to suggest a high-scoring game, the over – essentially, that both teams combine to score 6 or more goals – is the bet you want to place.

3. Live Betting Opportunities:

  • Tight games like Bruins vs. Rangers are ideal for live betting, where momentum shifts can create unique opportunities.
  • Example: Boston took a two goal lead heading into the third period. Once the third starts, New York scores a goal in the first minute, creating an opportune time to live bet the Rangers to continue their momentum.
