Key NHL Matchups to Bet On This Week

  1. Washington Capitals vs. Ottawa Senators (Jan 30):
    • A few interesting storylines enter Thursday night as both America and Canada’s nation capitals battle.
    • Washington has surprised a lot this season, dominating the league with the NHL’s top record with 73 points, and it’s impossible to ignore Alex Ovechkin’s chase for Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring record. He’s currently 19 goals away from tying it, and he faces an Ottawa Senators team that he has scored 37 career goals against.
    • Can the Senators finally break the playoff spell? Ottawa hasn’t made the playoffs since 2017, and after years of rebuilding, it’s finally in the hunt, holding the three-seed in the Atlantic Division. The Sens have also been red hot as of late, going 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, including two consecutive wins during this four-game homestand.
  2. St. Louis Blues vs. Colorado Avalanche (Jan 31):
    • Did the Colorado Avalanche ruin a good thing? The team was certainly shocked, especially superstar Nathan MacKinnon, as was Rantanen who didn’t want to leave and was willing to take a pay cut. While Colorado came into New York winning against the Rangers right after the trade, it immediately disappointed falling to the Islanders on Long Island. After a three-game east coast trip, and a five game stretch where they has fallen in four of their last five games, can the Avalanche bounce back against the St. Louis Blues?
    • The Blues were the second team this season to make a coaching change by hiring Jim Montgomery. It primarily worked for them to start, but then the Blues came back to Earth. They have now lost five games in a row and progressively fall in the standings where they were gaining ground. A battle in the Mile High City can’t do St. Louis any favors.
  3. Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Edmonton Oilers (Feb 1):
    • The battle of the NHL superstars Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews is always a spectacle to watch.
    • Earlier this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs overtook the Edmonton Oilers in an overtime victory in Toronto, so now McDavid & Co. seek revenge. Toronto leads the Atlantic Division, a position where it’s certainly used to, but has fallen in two consecutive games, getting outscored by Ottawa and Columbus 7-2. It’ll be a tough position to get off the schneid. Prior to this game, the Leafs will have taken on the Minnesota Wild, who are in a dry spell as well.
    • Edmonton is rolling, with three consecutive wins and seven wins in its last 10 games as of this writing. With McDavid back after serving a three-game suspension, the Oilers are at full strength and their quest for the Stanley Cup continues, after falling one game short of it last season. They will also get back goalie Stuart Skinner, who was missing from their win against Seattle after the birth of his son.
  4. Calgary Flames vs. Seattle Kraken (Feb 2):
    • We head from one Alberta team to the other. Clinging to a playoff spot, the Calgary Flames look to hold down the inconsistent Seattle Kraken in the Pacific Northwest.
    • As of this writing, the Flames have fallen in two straight with a one-point lead over the Canucks for the final Wild Card spot. Goaltender Dustin Wolf has been everything the Flames have needed since assuming the number one goalie role in Calgary. The rookie netminder is playing to an unbelievable .915 SV% and has won in 18 out of his 28 starts this season.
    • He will stand in the way of the Kraken who have been consistently inconsistent all season long. General Manager Ron Francis made a lot of moves in the offseason to improve this team, including hiring coach Dan Bylsma, but all it has taken them was eight points behind the Flames. Seattle has been decent at home and could have an advantage against Calgary who struggles on the road.

Best Weekly NHL Betting Strategies

1. Player Prop Bets:

  • Focus on stars like Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, and Nathan MacKinnon. Popular options include Player to score anytime or over/under points.
  • Example: Bet on McDavid to record over 1.5 points in the Oilers’ games this week.

2. Over/Under Bets:

  • When expecting a higher score in a certain game, betting the over is an optimal choice. Alternative totals depending on what sportsbook is in use, are also available. However, depending on what total is chosen, expect the odds to change
  • Example: Ottawa vs. Washington’s total is 5.5 which is typically a barometer for a lower scoring game. However, if you have good reason and analysis to suggest a high-scoring game, the over – essentially, that both teams combine to score 6 or more goals – is the bet you want to place.

3. Live Betting Opportunities:

  • Tight games like Kings vs. Panthers are ideal for live betting, where momentum shifts can create unique opportunities.
  • Example: Los Angeles took a two goal lead heading into the third period. Once the third starts, Florida scores a goal in the first minute, creating an opportune time to live bet the Panthers to continue their momentum.
