Carolina Hurricanes right winger Andrei Svechnikov will be held out of the lineup Friday versus the Detroit Red Wings for precautionary reasons, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour confirmed per team reporter Walt Ruff.

Svechnikov’s absence from the lineup follows Wednesday’s contest against the Metropolitan Division rival Washington Capitals that saw the Russian-born forward exit late in the second period after he suffered an undisclosed injury. Wednesday also marked just the third game back for Svechnikov following a seven-game stretch through late March in which he was sidelined with an upper-body injury.

On the season, Svechnikov has made 66 appearances with the Hurricanes in which he has collected 19 goals and 26 assists to sit fourth in team scoring with 45 points. Originally chosen second overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, Svechnikov has spent seven seasons counting 472 career contests with Carolina in which he has registered 150 goals and 211 assists for 361 points. In 2021-22, the talented forward reached career highs in all major offensive categories counting 30 goals and 39 assists for 69 points coming in 78 games.

Svechnikov has also impressed in the postseason where through 51 appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs he has put up 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points. Last spring, Svechnikov notched 11 points in as many games, while the prior year he was sidelined for the entire postseason after undergoing knee surgery.

Per PuckPedia, Svechnikov is in the fourth year of an eight-year contract that carries a $7.75-million annual average value.

In the midst of a three-game winning streak, the Hurricanes sit second place in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 46-24-4 and 96 points, poised to take on the New Jersey Devils in the opening round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. This spring marks the seventh straight year in with Carolina has qualified for the playoffs.
