Starting this season, the Carolina Hurricanes’ home rink will be under a new name. On Thursday, Brian Fork, chief executive office of Hurricanes Holdings, LLC, announced that the team and Centennial Authority have approved a multi-year naming rights agreement with Lenovo. The arena in Raleigh will now be known as “Lenovo Center.”

The agreement is scheduled to go for 10 years, through the conclusion of the 2033-34 NHL season.

A new era is here

For the past 12 years, the arena had been previously known as PNC Arena. Since the Hurricanes first stepped onto the ice in Raleigh in Oct. 1999, the building was known as the Raleigh Entertainment & Sports Arena (1999-02) and RBC Center (2002-12). The rink was renamed under the PNC banner after PNC Bank acquired RBC in 2012.

“Lenovo has been a valued partner of ours for many years,” Fork said in a release. “We’re thrilled to elevate that partnership now by renaming the arena Lenovo Center. Lenovo has both strong local ties and a worldwide footprint, and we’re proud to have the Hurricanes’ name associated with a true leader in global technology. As we transition to this new era, we are grateful for our longtime naming rights collaborator, PNC, who will continue to be a major partner of our organization.”

The arena is also home to North Carolina State’s men’s basketball program.

“This is an exciting day for Raleigh, Wake County, and the whole state of North Carolina,” Philip Isley, Chairman of the Centennial Authority, said. “This partnership is about more than just renaming the arena. Lenovo will play a vital role integrating technology into our upcoming arena renovations and enhancements. Lenovo has deep roots in North Carolina, and we’re thrilled that they are strengthening those roots with this naming rights agreement.”

Since the Hurricanes began calling Raleigh home in the 1999-00 season, the team has made the playoffs 10 times, winning five division titles and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final twice, winning it all in 2006 on home ice.

A former press conference and public unveiling of the Lenovo Center’s new signage is scheduled for Sept. 19.
