The Detroit Red Wings have acquired goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks, according to multiple reports.
Gibson, 31, posted an 11-11-2 record and a .911 save percentage in 29 games with the Ducks during the 2024-25 regular season. The Pittsburgh product is under contract through 2027 at a $6.4 million annual cap hit.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report the news of Gibson’s departure from Anaheim on Saturday morning. Frank Seravalli subsequently publicized the full return, which includes future second- and fourth-round picks, as well as goaltender Petr Mrazek, before the teams announced the trade on their social media channels.
Neither team retained salary on the goaltenders swapping sides in the deal.

Mrazek, 33, is on the move yet again after being briefly reacquired by the Red Wings (his original draft club) ahead of the 2025 trade deadline. The Czech goaltender is signed for the 2025-26 season at a $4.25 million cap hit; he appeared in 38 games split between the Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks in 2024-25.
With Gibson finally dealt after years of rumors and speculation, the goaltending market now looks much different as we approach the start of unrestricted free agency on July 1, when the likes of Jake Allen and Dan Vladar are projected to be the top names available.
A second-round pick (No. 39 overall) of the Ducks in 2011, Gibson made his NHL debut with the club in the 2013-14 season after wrapping up a stellar junior career with the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers. He was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team in 2016 and won a career-high 31 games in 2017-18.
Through 506 career games over 12 seasons spent exclusively in Anaheim to date, Gibson has put together a 204-217-63 record to go along with 24 shutouts and a .910 save percentage. He has also gone 11-13 with a .912 in 26 playoff contests.
The Red Wings, who have not qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2016, are now slated to enter the 2025-26 season with a goaltending trifecta of Gibson, Cam Talbot, and top prospect Sebastian Cossa.
