Red Wings reassign Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin-Pellikka to AHL

The Detroit Red Wings have announced that they have reassigned Michael Brandsegg-Nygård and Axel Sandin-Pellikka from Skelleftea in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Sandin-Pellikka was selected by the Red Wings 17th overall at the 2023 NHL Draft and signed his entry-level contract last May. Brandsegg-Nygård was selected 15th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft and signed his ELC last summer.

Sandin-Pellikka notched 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points in 46 games. He added eight points in 11 SHL Playoff contests. Sandin-Pellikka scored the most goals and points by an SHL junior skater this past season.

Sandin-Pellikka was named captain for Team Sweden at the 2025 World Juniors, where he tallied four goals and six assists for 10 points in seven games, capturing a silver medal. He also won the silver at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, 2023 IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship and 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, and was named the best defenseman at the U-18s and World Juniors.

Brandsegg-Nygård tallied five goals and six assists for 11 points in 42 games, he added four goals and six points in 11 SHL Playoff contests with Skelleftea. Brandsegg-Nygård spent the 2023-24 season with Mora IK in the HockeyAllsvenskan, where he tallied 18 points in 41 games.

Internationally, Brandsegg-Nygård represented Norway at the 2024 World Juniors, where he scored three goals and five points in five games. That same calendar year, he also suited up for Norway at the IIHF World Championships, where he scored three goals and five points in seven games.

The Griffins will face off against the Rockford Ice Hogs on Wednesday and Friday and then will take on the Iowa Wild on Saturday.
