It’s been a productive day for the Detroit Red Wings.

After signing restricted free agent winger Jonatan Berggren to a one-year contract earlier on Monday, the Red Wings have announced that they have also signed winger Lucas Raymond to an eight-year contract with an $8.075 million cap hit.

Raymond was a restricted free agent after the conclusion of his three-year, entry-level contract with a $925,000 cap hit. He receives a raise of more than $7 million per year, with his new contract obviously having the highest AAV of his career. With this new contract, the Red Wings lock him up until he’s 30 years old at 9.18% of the 2024-25 salary cap.

There are currently no details regarding any no-move/no-trade clauses or signing bonuses with this contract.

With his new deal, Raymond will have the 46th-highest cap hit among forwards next season. His closest cap hit comparables are St. Louis Blues’ forwards Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou, who are both locked up to $8.125 million cap hits for the next seven seasons.

Raymond had a breakout year for the Red Wings in 2023-24 with 31 goals and 41 assists for 72 points in 82 games. He finished with eight more goals and 15 more points than his rookie season in 2021-22, which was his previous career high in both categories.

Raymond was the fourth-overall pick for the Red Wings in the 2020 NHL Draft out of the Swedish Hockey League, and after spending another season with Frolunda HC, he made his NHL debut with Detroit in 2021 and has spent the last three seasons with the team.

Raymond joins Berggren as the two signings that the Red Wings have made today to finally lock up some of their RFAs. Detroit only has one remaining RFA in star defenseman Moritz Seider, and they still have more than $8.7 million in cap space to work with to lock him up. The Red Wings also made some moves outside of their RFAs this offseason, bringing in Vladimir Tarasenko, Cam Talbot, Erik Gustafsson and Tyler Motte over the course of the summer.
