McDavid Watch has come to an end, for now.

It comes after an entire summer’s worth of speculation on whether the former first-overall pick was going to sign with the team he’s been with since 2015. The swinging confidence of Oilers fans was determined by the consistent question of whether McDavid would sign before the regular season, or would he wait it out until next year, or would he even re-sign with Edmonton at all? All of those emotions can finally be put to bed, and the team can simply focus on hockey…for at least the next couple of years.
The Richmond Hill, Ont. native is heading into the final season of his eight-year contract extension, which he signed in July 2017. The deal also has a cap hit of $12.5 million.
It goes without saying about the level of importance McDavid has on the Oilers. Since day one, he has been the best player on the team. Even with names like Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Evan Bouchard and Zach Hyman becoming key supporting pieces around him, McDavid has been the face of the franchise, becoming the best player in the world in the process.
In his 10 years in the league, McDavid has scored fewer than 100 points only twice. The first was in his rookie season, when an injury limited him to just 45 games. The other came during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 campaign, when he posted 97 points in 64 games. Last year, the 28-year-old potted 26 goals and 74 assists for 100 points, his lowest point total in five years.
McDavid has taken home the Hart Trophy as league MVP three times in his career, winning the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s leading scorer five times. He’s also won the Ted Lindsay Award on four occasions, as well as the Rocket Richard Trophy after scoring 64 goals in 2022-23. His 42 points during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs led to McDavid winning the Conn Smythe Trophy, despite the Oilers losing to the Florida Panthers in the final.
In 712 games, McDavid has scored 361 goals and 721 assists for 1,082 points, with another 150 points in 96 postseason affairs.
