“I’m told the backdoor was kicked in at Malkin’s home,” Borrasso said in her report. “The alarm system and cameras happened to be door, and apparently Malkin’s safe was kept open.”

Borrasso added that the break-in likely occurred sometime during the Penguins’ Saturday afternoon contest against the Ottawa Senators. A few hours after the game, someone called 9-1-1 and authorities went to his home.

Malkin is the latest professional athlete to have their homes targeted, which includes Dallas Stars’ forward Tyler Seguin, as well as in the NFL with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, as well as the NBA’s Bobby Portis of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Last December, the FBI issued a bulletin to all major sports leagues in North America, informing teams and players that professional athletes have become a target for burglaries. The FBI suggested the behavior, which included using publicly available information to target homes, is similar to the techniques used by other criminal organizations.

The 38-year-old Malkin has eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 42 regular-season games this season, tied for third on the team in points. Now in his 19th NHL season, the future Hockey Hall of Famer has 506 goals and 823 assists for 1,329 points in 1,187 games, all with the Penguins. Malkin is 34th on the NHL’s all-time points list.

Malkin has won the league Art Ross Trophy twice, leading the NHL in points with 113 points in 2008-09 and 109 in 2011-12, respectively.

Malkin has also played in 177 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 67 goals and adding 113 assists for 180 points. The 2004 No. 2 overall pick was a major factor in Pittsburgh winning three Stanley Cup championships in 2009, 2016 and 2017. Malkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy as Playoff MVP in 2009.
