One of the top scorers in the NHL has etched his name atop a franchise’s record books.

On Monday night, Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give his team a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks. It gave the Jets their 10th win in a row and marked the 329th goal of Scheifele’s NHL career, making him the all-time leading goal scorer in Jets/Atlanta Thrashers history.

Scheifele passed former Thrashers star Ilya Kovalchuk for the franchise lead in goals. The records date back to when the Thrashers entered the league in 1999, three years after the original Jets franchise moved to Phoenix. Scheifele trails the late Dale Hawerchuk for the most goals scored by a player in a Jets uniform. “Ducky” scored 379 in 713 games with Winnipeg.

The marker on Monday night was the Kitchener, Ontario native 32nd goal of the season, placing him third in the NHL, 10 back of Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl for the league lead. With 65 points in 58 games, Scheifele remains second on the Jets in scoring, trailing teammate Kyle Connor, who has 71 points thus far.

Scheifele has spent his entire career in Winnipeg. He was the team’s first draft pick after the team relocated from Atlanta in 2011. The former seventh-overall pick played just a few games during the new Jets’ “inaugural season” but became a mainstay in the lineup during the 2013-14 season. Since then, he has been one of the team’s most lethal offensive weapons.

The 31-year-old has hit the 20-goal mark nine times in his career, potting at least 30 goals four times. Scheifele posted a career-high 42 goals during the 2022-23 season, so far the only time he’s ever notched 40 in a single year.

In 855 NHL appearances, Scheifele has also registered 453 assists and 782 points, including 38 points in 42 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Jets (41-14-3) regain the best record in the NHL, sitting one point ahead of the Washington Capitals. Winnipeg is nine points clear of the second-place Dallas Stars in the race for the best record in the Western Conference.
