<p>The <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/montreal-canadiens/line-combinations">Montreal Canadiens</a> announced Friday they have signed defenseman Mike Matheson to a <a href="https://www.nhl.com/canadiens/news/five-year-contract-extension-for-mike-matheson-nov-28-2025">five-year, $30-million contract extension</a> that will pay him an annual average value of $6 million and keep him with the club through the 2030-31 season.</p>

<p>Matheson is in the final season of an eight-year, $39-million contract extension he signed with the <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/florida-panthers/line-combinations">Florida Panthers</a> at the beginning of the 2017-18 campaign. </p>



<p>Through 22 games in 2025-26, Matheson, 31, <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/players/stats/skaters?team=montreal-canadiens&amp;year=2026&amp;season=regular">has four goals and 10 assists for 14 points</a>, averaging 24:50 of ice time, <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/players/stats/skaters?year=2026&amp;season=regular">which ranks 10th in the NHL</a>. <p>The 6-foot-2 defender <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/pittsburgh-penguins-acquire-jeff-petry-and-ryan-poehling-from-montreal-canadiens-for-mike-matheson-and-a-pick">was acquired by the Canadiens</a>, along with a 2023 fourth-round pick, in a trade with the <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/pittsburgh-penguins/line-combinations">Pittsburgh Penguins</a> for defenseman Jeff Petry and center Ryan Poehling in July 2022</p>



<p>Matheson, taken No. 23 overall by Florida in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, has 78 goals and 201 assists for 279 points while averaging 21:58 of ice time in 649 career regular-season games with the Canadiens, Panthers and Penguins. </p>



<p>Matheson has also played in 25 Stanley Cup Playoff games, where he’s recorded one goal and seven assists for eight points. </p>



<p><a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/teams/standings">The Canadiens are 12-7-3 with 27 points</a> with a goal differential of minus-three. <p>Captain Nick Suzuki leads the team in both <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/players/stats/skaters?team=montreal-canadiens&amp;year=2026&amp;season=regular">assists and points with 19 and 26</a>, respectively. Meanwhile, Cole Caufield has a <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/players/stats/skaters?team=montreal-canadiens&amp;year=2026&amp;season=regular">team-leading 13 goals</a>. Goaltender <a href="https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/players/stats/goalies?team=montreal-canadiens&amp;year=2026&amp;season=regular">Jakub Dobes has an 8-2-2 record</a> with an .897 save percentage and 2.89 goals against average. </p>
