At one point this season, the first round matchup between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New Jersey Devils could have been one of the most entertaining series. Both were playing like two of the best teams in hockey, and after the Hurricanes paid up to bring in Mikko Rantanen, it could have been a barn burner.

Since then, the Canes had to move on from Rantanen after failing to lock him up long term, but they’ve still managed to play some excellent hockey. However, the Devils can’t say the same thing. They’ve struggled for the second half of the season, and they’ve dealt with a plethora of injuries, particularly the season-ending injury to Jack Hughes. Now, this series looks like an easy win for the Hurricanes.

Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli talked about the upcoming matchup between Carolina and New Jersey, and how it will probably be an easy win for the Canes on Daily Faceoff Live.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I actually think the Hurricanes-Devils series could be quicker than the Washington CapitalsMontreal Canadiens series. I think Carolina could run this thing pretty quick.

Frank Seravalli: I agree. I have the Canes winning that series in a sweep. Since January 1st, the New Jersey Devils were the 28th-best team in the NHL in points gained. It’s not been a good run of hockey. Obviously, no Jack Hughes. Dougie Hamilton has been banged up of late.

I just think Carolina has significant advantages in almost every aspect of the game. You could say that Jacob Markstrom could steal you a series, but look how poorly he’s played down the stretch, especially since March 1st. I would be starting Jake Allen in Game One, not even Jacob Markstrom. We had Devin Dubnyk on earlier this week, and he talked about a higher ceiling for Jacob Markstrom. Okay, sure. But I want the guy who’s played better in net.
