Soucy was ranked sixth on Daily Faceoff insider Frank Seravalli”s most recent Trade Targets list. Soucy recently found himself as a healthy scratch in Vancouver, with many expecting the Canucks to move on from the defensive blueliner after the team released a memo in February indicating that he was available.

Soucy is more known for his own-zone play, and with a cap hit of $3.25 million until 2025-26, he doesn’t cost a lot to keep the puck away from the net. Soucy had to waive his no-trade clause for the move to happen, with teams interested in his physicality and shot blocking, among other elements of his game. The 6-foot-5 blueliner is tough to play against, and while he’s not overly quick, he makes up for it with good positioning.

Soucy has three goals and 10 points in 59 games for Vancouver, far below his best of 21 set with the Seattle Kraken in 2021-22. He finished his Canucks career with a goal in his final game on Wednesday night. In 349 regular-season games over seven seasons, he has 26 goals and 84 points.

The third-round pick that the Canucks acquired from the Rangers was the same 2025 pick that New York received from the Vegas Golden Knights as part of the return for Reilly Smith earlier on Thursday, which originally belonged to the San Jose Sharks. With the Sharks likely to finish at the bottom of the standings this season, that basically makes the pick a late second-round selection.

With the trade, the Rangers make another altercation to their backend that has seen many players go in and out this season. Already, they’ve moved on from Jacob Trouba, Ryan Lindgren and Victor Mancini, while bringing in William Borgen, Urho Vakkanainen, Calvin de Haan, and now Soucy.
