On Monday, New York Rangers president and general Manager Chris Drury announced that the team has re-signed defenseman Matthew Robertson to a one-year contract extension.
The contract will be two-way, with Robertson making the League minimum of $775,000 at the NHL level.
Robertson has been with the Rangers’ organization since 2019. The 23-year-old has yet to make his NHL debut, playing exclusively with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL) since turning pro in 2021-22.
In 190 AHL games, the Edmonton native has tallied 55 points (10 goals, 45 assists). He played a career-high 68 games with the Wolf Pack in 2023-24, finishing with 21 points (four goals, 17 assists) and a minus-11 rating. Robertson added one assist and a minus-7 rating in 10 Calder Cup Playoff games. His best AHL season came in 2022-23 when he tallied a career-high 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in 57 games.
Prior to beginning his AHL career, Robertson spent four seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Hockey League (WHL). He served as alternate captain for the final three seasons from 2018 to 2021 and racked up 127 points (31 goals, 96 assists) in 208 career WHL games. The 6-foot-4 defender shined brightest during the 2019-20 season when he was nearly a point-per-game player with the Oil Kings, racking up a career-high (across all levels) 47 points (13 goals, 34 assists) in 60 regular-season games.
Robertson has also represented Team Canada twice on the international level. He recorded six points (two goals, four assists) for Canada Black at the 2017 U17 World Hockey Championships and two assists in five games at the 2017 U18 World Junior Championship.
Robertson was originally drafted by New York in the second round (No. 49) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
