Jason Robertson Over 2.5 Shots on Goal: -128 Sports Interaction
The Dallas Stars have played to a record of 17-6-2 over the last 25 games, moving all the way up to third in the NHL standings in the process. One of the key reasons for their dominant stretch of play has been a return to form from top forward Jason Robertson, who’s put up 33 points in those 25 games, the fourth-most in the NHL over that span.
Head coach Pete DeBoer has adjusted his offensive units after the Stars’ 6-4 loss in Columbus on Friday, moving Logan Stankoven up to the top line with Robertson and Roope Hintz. Ultimately, the only thing that would be truly notable is if Robertson was separated from Hintz, but Robertson-Hintz-Stankoven has been an effective trio this season. In 91.9 minutes together, they have generated 3.26 xGF/60, and 69.19 shot attempts per 60.
Over the last 15 games, Robertson has piled up 3.60 shots per game, recording over 2.5 shots on goal 11 times. In his current roles, it seems likely that the dominant winger will continue to pile up shots at a comparable rate, which would make prices in the -130 range extremely profitable.
The Kings are one of the best defensive teams in the league, and over the last 10 games they rank 11th in SA/60.
Robertson did record three shots on goal when these teams met last week in Los Angeles though, and Pete DeBoer having last change in this game should help him get Robertson into some more favorable matchups. This will likely be a highly competitive game as the Stars look to extract some revenge for last week’s loss, and Robertson should be offered more minutes than he has in a number of the team’s recent multi-goal wins in most game scripts.
At -128, I believe we are getting a good price to back Robertson over 2.5 shots on goal, a prop which has hit in seven straight games.
Martin Necas Over 1.5 Points: +180 Sports Interaction
The Colorado Avalanche are massive favorites Friday evening as they take on the Minnesota Wild, who have fallen off quite badly after their incredible start to the season. They were pummelled 6-1 last night by the Utah Hockey Club, and will be skating in a tough back-to-back spot at altitude in this matchup.
Over the last 15 games, the Wild are just 7-8-0 and have allowed 3.27 goals against per game. Their goaltenders have stopped just .895% of shots faced in that span, which is a serious problem given that they have allowed the fourth-most shots against per 60.
In fairness to the Wild, it’s important to point out that they have played through a disastrous injury situation. While their defense core is now back at full strength, they are still suffering from the losses of two excellent skaters in Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek, who are both far better than average forwards from a defensive perspective.
At the time that Necas was traded from the Carolina Hurricanes, he was skating alongside Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Eric Robinson on the team’s second line, and had still recorded 55 points in 49 games. It seemed entirely possible that he could be more productive in a better role, and his skillset has meshed perfectly with Nathan MacKinnon on the Avalanche’s top-line.
In 114.2 minutes together, MacKinnon, Necas, and Artturri Lehkonen have generated chances at an almost unheard of rate. Their 5.05 xGF/60 ranks first in the NHL among any line to spend over 100 minutes together, with the next closest unit sitting at 4.12.
Necas has also fit in well on the Avs’ top power play unit, which has succeeded on 28.6% of opportunities in the 11 games he has been with the team.
Necas has recorded 12 points in 11 games with the Avs, and recorded two or more four times, including three points in their last matchup. In a highly favorable matchup to create offense, +180 looks to be a good price to back the dynamic winger recording two points.
