The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday that it has named its Rookie of the Year Trophy after Pittsburgh Penguins captain and Rimouski Oceanic graduate Sidney Crosby.
A native of Cole Harbour, N.S., Crosby spent two seasons with the QMJHL’s Oceanic from 2003-05 prior to his first-overall selection by the Penguins in the 2005 NHL Draft. In all, through two seasons and 121 total appearances with Rimouski, Crosby amassed 120 goals and 183 assists for 303 points.
“Some of my fondest memories of hockey come from my time in the QMJHL playing for the Oceanic,” Crosby said in a statement. “It is an absolute honour to have the league’s Rookie of the Year Trophy named after me.”
Added QMJHL Commissioner Mario Cecchini, “When the trophy committee met, Crosby’s name quickly became the unanimous choice. He has left such an important mark on the history of the Oceanic and the QMJHL, and you can see how proud he is of his time with us every time he talks about it. What’s more, the timing is perfect with the presentation of the 2025 Memorial Cup in Rimouski.”
In his freshman season in the junior circuit, Crosby was named the QMJHL’s Rookie of the Year after he posted 135 points counting 54 goals and 81 assists in 59 outings. Beyond top rookie honors, that season also saw Crosby presented with the Jean Beliveau Trophy as the QMJHL’s leading scorer in addition to the Michel Briere Trophy as the league’s MVP. Nationally, Crosby was also recognized as both the CHL Rookie of the Year as well as the CHL Player of the Year.
Crosby’s dominance then continued in his second season with Rimouski as he led the QMJHL in all major offensive categories including 66 goals, 102 assists, and 168 points en route to back-to-back CHL Player of the Year recognition before guiding the Oceanic to the Championship Final of the Memorial Cup.
