Despite some positive headlines last week, the St. Louis Blues aren’t playing like a playoff contender.

Following a 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night, the Blues have dropped three of their last five games. Despite an exceptional beatdown of the Chicago Blackhawks at the Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve, followed up by shutting out the Ottawa Senators in their first game of 2025, St. Louis is lacking the inconsistency necessary to get back into the playoffs.

St. Louis is fifth in the Central Division, and four points back of the Vancouver Canucks for the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

With the trade deadline less than two months away, many are wondering what moves, if any, general manager Doug Armstrong will make. The longtime executive has always been vocal about not being a “buyer” if he doesn’t think his team is a true contender. That said, the Blues might be the ones offloading players in the foreseeable future.

On Thursday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk discuss what is next for the Blues.

Tyler Yaremchuk: Even with [Jim Montgomery], they are nothing more than mid, and mid won’t get you into the playoffs.

Frank Seravalli: Couldn’t agree more…I’m concerned about the overall state of the Blues and where they head from here…This team, to me, doesn’t have enough juice. They are mid and I think where they go from here – What’s the next thing that’s going to come along that’s going to push them up the ladder?

When you think about rebuilds, and you think about where everyone’s heading, Blues are the team that’s bucking the trend, saying, “In our market, we really can’t rebuild, we can’t go to the bottom of the standings…” On the other end of that, what’s the reward? How does St. Louis get from where they’re at now to being in the top eight? I don’t see a path for them to do that.
