Alex Ovechkin is almost at the finish line to set the all-time NHL goal record.

The Washington Capitals captain has officially tied Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history by scoring his 894th goal on Friday night.

The goal came in the middle of the third period of the Capitals game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and Ovechkin scored it in typical Ovechkin fashion. With the Caps on the power play, a good passing play in the middle of the ice saw another longtime Capital in John Carlson set up Ovechkin for a one-timer just outside of the faceoff dot on the power play to give them a 4-3 lead in the game, which held as the game winner.

With the goal, Ovechkin gets his 894th goal in his career, which ties Gretzky for the all-time goal record. Ovechkin achieves it in only seven more games than Gretzky, as he scores it in his 1,486th game, while Gretzky scored his 894th goal in his 1,479th game.

The goal was Ovechkin’s second of the game, after he scored in the first period to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead. That goal also came on a one-timer, although much closer to the net, and became the second-oldest player to score 40 goals in a season. He did not complete the hat trick to break the record that night.

The goal gives Ovechkin 41 goals on the year, along with 27 assists for 68 points in 60 games this season. While all eyes had been on Ovechkin getting closer to that record this season, after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign, few expected him to actually reach that this season, especially considering that it’s seen the first long-term injury in his NHL career.

Ovechkin will get his next chance to break the record when the Capitals visit the New York Islanders on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
