As we pass the midway point of the 2024-25 NHL regular season, a trending topic in hockey circles is who fans and pundits would give their midseason awards to. One of those awards is the Jack Adams, and Washington Capitals’ Head Coach Spencer Carbery is at or near the top of everyone’s list.
The 43-year-old is in his second year behind the bench in D.C., and so far he’s taken a Capitals squad on a downward trajectory and put them on a path to being one of the best teams in the league. After squeaking into the post-season last spring, the Capitals are now 29-10-5 with 63 points, first in both the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference.
Through 44 games, there’s a case to be made that they are one of a select group of squads who are true Stanley Cup contenders.
On Thursday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk are joined by former QMJHL coach Jon Goyens for another edition of “The Coach’s Room,” where they discuss the Capitals and how Carbery has turned this club into a juggernaut.
Jon Goyens: I think Carbery has gotten a lot out of certain players like Pierre-Luc Dubois. He was “not coachable” and he doesn’t compete enough, then all of a sudden, you watch him now, you watch Aliaksei Protas play, you look at how Alex Ovechkin is on a near goal-per-game basis, and it’s almost like a resurgence in there play.
Jakob Chychrun is like the stud that he should have been five years ago. Look at how hard they play and the consistency they play with, and the effect he’s had on the discipline on Tom Wilson, being as effective as he is offensively, as well as diminishing his, let’s call it “stupidity” at times.
