Will we see one of the NCAA’s top coaches move up to the NHL?
Will we see one of the NCAA’s top coaches move up to the NHL?

While everyone’s excited about the action at the NCAA Men’s Frozen Four, there is some speculation on what the future could behold for the bench bosses in St. Louis.

Denver head coach David Carle’s name has been brought up time and again about moving up to the NHL, thanks to the success he has guided the team to in recent years. Under Carle, the Pioneers made it to the Frozen Four in three of the last four years, winning national championships in 2022 and 2024. On top of that, he coached Team USA to back-to-back gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Junior Championships.

There has been some speculation that Boston University head coach Jay Pandolfo might be in line for the Boston Bruins job if he wants it. The Terriers have made it to three straight Frozen Fours under the two-time Stanley Cup champion.

The coach he went up against was Pat Ferschweiler. The former Detroit Red Wings assistant coach has turned Western Michigan into a force in the NCHC in his four years on the job, guiding the Broncos to their first Frozen Four berth this year. Ferschweiler’s Broncos upended the Terriers in the national championship game on Saturday.

On Friday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Colby Cohen explains which of the trio might be close to taking an NHL job.

Tyler Yaremchuk: [David Carle] will only go if it’s a perfect kind of fit. He’s not just going to leave for any job.

Colby Cohen: Yeah, I’m going to pour water on the whole Chicago Blackhawks rumors. He’s not going to Chicago. I don’t know if Jay Pandolfo is offered the Bruins job next week – unless it’s a lot of years and a lot of money – I don’t think he says yes to it. His kid just made the USNTDP. He’s two years away from having his son at BU with Carter Meyer, who’s Freddie Meyer’s son, and they were teammates at BU as well. … The program is healthy. He’s about to get a huge contract extension and raise where he’s going to make $700.000, $800,000 a year and be unfireable for the rest of his life.

I think Pat Ferschweiler is the most interesting guy of this group. I’m not sure that he gets paid the same type of money that David Carle and Jay Pandolfo make at Western. He was linemates with Keith Jones at Western Michigan. … He’s got a big personality and a big presence, and I think all three of those guys will have NHL interviews this summer. Don’t be shocked if Pat Ferschweiler ends up behind the bench for the Philadelphia Flyers. … I’m just saying, don’t be shocked. He will be on a short list of candidates for that team.
