Vancouver Canucks president of hockey operations Jim Rutherford dropped a bomb on the hockey world on Monday when he mentioned the fact that captain Quinn Hughes wants to play hockey with his brothers, Jack and Luke. While he did allude to the fact that that could be solved by the Canucks acquiring his brothers from the New Jersey Devils, it does leave plenty of concern that Quinn may look to move on from the Canucks at some point in his career.
So how concerned should Canucks fans be about the possibility of Hughes moving on? Frank Seravalli and Tyler Yaremchuk talked about what might play a role in Hughes staying or going down the road on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: I think what it does is it opens the door for the possibility that this might be out of the Canucks’ hands. That, plus I think this is a really significant moment in Quinn Hughes’ tenure for what happens next with Rick Tocchet.
He was very vocal the last couple weeks about wanting to play for Tocchet, and how he’s been the best coach that he’s played. Adam Foote on his staff has gone a long way in helping with that. And this team is the most competitive that they’ve been under Rick Tocchet.
So if you’re Quinn Hughes, and you want to try and find a way to get back into contender status, having him on the bench is going to help. And if he goes somewhere else, I think it’s a big blow, not just to the fabric of the team and the culture that they’ve tried to build, but more than that, I think what it does is it further cracks open the door for Quinn Hughes to go elsewhere later.
Tyler Yaremchuk: Yeah, it’s crazy to think that a few years ago when we would have conversations about the Vancouver Canucks, [the talk was about] these pillars. It’s [Elias] Pettersson, J.T. Miller, Brock Boeser, Thatcher Demko, and Quinn Hughes.
And now you look at all of them. Miller’s gone, Boeser is as good is gone, and the other three now all have question marks around them. It’s crazy to see how this has played out in the last 24 months of Vancouver, very unpredictable.
Frank Seravalli: There’s a very real possibility that, starting on October 7th when the puck drops next season, Quinn Hughes is the last of the pillars remaining.
