Bryan Rust (lower body) practiced Friday but will not be in the Sabres' lineup Friday vs. Pittsburgh.

Rust's return to the lineup appears to be on the horizon as he participated in practice on Friday but unfortunately is not quite ready to return to game action. After a down 2022-23 campaign, Rust was in the process of having a terrific rebound season, tallying 16 points (9G / 7A) in 17 games thus far.

Rust will miss Wednesday vs. the New York Rangers after it was announced he was day-to-day with a lower-body injury. If he is forced to miss an extedned chunk of time it would be a shame as the 31-year-old winger is on pace for career highs in almost all categories as he has nine goals, seven assists, 55 SOG, and a +10 plus/minus through 17 games played.

Rust missed the Penguins' previous game due to the birth of his child but is expected to return to the Pittsburgh lineup Thursday vs. the New York Islanders. The 30-year-old has 15 goals, 22 assists, 162 SOG, 21 PIMs and a -6 plus/minus through 62 games this season.

Rust missed the last four games while in COVID-19 protocol but may play Monday in Vegas. Rust was one of the hottest players in the NHL before landing in protocol, scoring goals in four straight games, totalling 12 points (8G / 4A) in that span.

This is terrible timing for Rust, who has been one of the hottest players in the NHL recently, scoring eight goals with four assists (12 points) in his last four games. Jeff Carter will replace him in the lineup and Evan Rodrigues may replace him on the top line.

Rust was moved to IR on Sunday and the Penguins announced that he will miss at least a couple of weeks on Monday. Injuries have been a major issue for Rustin his career, only playing a full schedule on 2020-21. With Rust out, Evan Rodrigues will remain on the top line and top power-play unit on Monday.

Rust was hurt in the second game of the season and is expected to miss at least a couple of weeks. This is another huge blow for the Penguins, who are already without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin upfront. Luckily for the Penguins, they only have seven games over the next three weeks, so Rust may not miss too many games.
