The veteran has stopped 53 of the 57 shots (.930 SV%) he has faced so far, but remains a risky option tonight in Minnesota.

McElhinney was picked up off of waivers off of Toronto with Scott Darling out to start the season. In his first start with the Hurricanes, McElhinney turned aside 31 of 32 shots in the Hurricanes win in Columbus. With Petr Mrazek struggling in his first couple of starts, McElhinney will get his second start against a Canucks team that has scored nine goals in their first two games.

The Hurricanes have claimed Curtis McElhinney off of waivers from Toronto.

McElhinney lost the backup job in Toronto to Garret Sparks, so he was placed on waivers and picked up by the Hurricanes. McElhinney figures to serve as Petr Mrazek’s backup while Scott Darling (lower-body) is out, but will likely find himself back on waivers after that.

McElhinney allowed three goals on 29 shots in the Maple Leafs loss to the Jets on Saturday. McElhinney will surprisingly get a second straight start, which will give Frederik Andersen a full week of rest. The veteran netminder stopped 38 of 40 shots in a 5-2 win in Buffalo on March 15th.

McElhinney has started all of the Maple Leafs back-to-back this season, so tonight will be no difference as he faces the Panthers in Florida.
