It was believed that Helm’s time with the Red Wings had come to an end and he was going to hit free agency, but Detroit came in with a five-year deal in the final hour to lock the 29-year-old up through the 2020-21 season. Helm is coming off of a sub-par year, having posted just 13 goals and 13 assists (26 points) in 77 games.
Helm missed Sunday’s game vs. the Red Wings, but took part in Tuesday’s morning skate. Monitor Helm’s status during the pre-game warmups—if he can’t play, either Tomas Jurco or Teemu Pulkkinen will re-enter the lineup.
Helm missed the first four games of the regular season after separating his shoulder in the first training camp practice. Helm has missed the last three games and he will miss a fourth straight tonight when the Red Wings take on the Oilers. Helm has been skating, but not with the team. He is expected to miss the Wings’ two games during the week, but could be back for their back-to-back on the weekend.

Helm left after playing just 2:41 before retiring to the dressing room for the rest of the game. He took a few had hits in the first period, so that was likely when he got hurt.

Helm participated in his first team practice since getting concussed this morning. Helm acknowledged that it is difficult to put a timeframe on a concussion, but hopes to be back next week. Look for him to return on Tuesday vs. the Maple Leafs or Thursday vs. the Penguins.
This is a good sign for the Red Wings, who are in desperate need of centres. Helm was expected to miss at least a week, so this is a sign that he could be ready to return on Sunday vs. the Blackhawks.
