The Detroit Red Wings have recalled skilled forward Gustav Nyquist from the Grand Rapids Griffins. He will make his NHL debut Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild at Joe Louis Arena (7:30 p.m., Fox Sports Net Detroit).

Nyquist has clearly impressed team brass with four goals and nine points over nine games at the AHL. Look for him to get a shot on a scoring line.

But the NHL will have to wait. The Red Wings have a crowded roster and a preference for allowing prospects to marinate in the minors. So, Nyquist will start the season with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Nyquist continues his preseason tear, making the Red Wings makes some very tough decisions. Last season, this collegiate standout scored 18 goals and 51 points through 36 games with the University of Maine before playing eight games for the Grand Rapid Griffins. Although he will start the season in the AHL, keep his name in mind for the future.

DETROIT -- Talented, young forward Gustav Nyquist was impressive again Friday for the Detroit Red Wings

Nyquist continues to impress during training camp but likely will fall victim to the numbers game. Last season, this collegiate standout scored 18 goals and 51 points through 36 games with the University of Maine before playing eight games for the Grand Rapid Griffins. Although he will start the season in the AHL, keep his name in mind for the future.

“What I saw in the rookie camp is Nyquist is going to be an NHL player for sure,'' Babcock said Tuesday. “When is he going to be that?'' Not this season. Nyquist will spend his first pro season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, honing the skills that made him a two-time finalist for the Hobey Baker Award at Maine.

No direct fantasy hockey advice, just an excellent tidbit to remember down the road.
