Zatkoff is expected to start for the injured Jonathan Quick on Friday.

Quick was injured in Wednesday’s season opener and Zatkoff played the final two periods, stopping 15 of 16 shots (.938 SV%) in a 2-1 loss to the Sharks. Zatkoff will be a busy man with Quick expected to miss an extended period of time. The 29-year-old comes in with a career 2.64 GAA and .915 SV% in 36 NHL games.

The Kings have signed Jeff Zatkoff to a two-year contract worth $1.8 million.

Zatkoff, 29, was originally drafted by the Kings back in 2006, but never made it to the NHL despite appearing in 114 games with the Kings AHL affiliate. He spent the last four years with the Penguins organization, where he appeared in 35 NHL games and 86 AHL contests. He is 16-14-3 with a 2.66 GAA and .915 SV% in his NHL career and now returns to the team that drafted him ready to serve as Jonathan Quick’s backup.

Zatkoff surrendered four goals on 28 shots in the Penguins’ 4-2 loss to the Rangers in game two. Marc-Andre Fleury (concussion) will not play tonight, but Matt Murray (head) is available so there’s no official word on who is starting for Pittsburgh—although Zatkoff was the first off. He is 1-1-0 with a 3.07 GAA and .908 SV% in the first two games of the series.

Zatkoff allowed two goals on 44 shots in the Penguins win in Florida on February 6th. Marc-Andre Fleury was scheduled to start on Saturday, but the Penguins made a late change with Fleury sick. Fleury is 4-5-1 with a 2.65 GAA and .923 SV% on the season.

Zatkoff made 50 saves on 53 shots in the Penguins win over the Sabres on October 29th. It was Zatkoff’s only start of the season but he made two games worth of saves in one. He is a solid backup on a good team, making him a reasonable spot-start option versus an Oilers team without Connor McDavid.

Zatkoff only appeared in one game with the Penguins last season, but is the Penguins full-time backup this season. In 21 career NHL games, Zatkoff has gone 12-7-2 with a 2.58 GAA and .913 SV%. In a full season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he went 18-14-4 with a 2.45 GAA and .910 SV%. He has proven to be a capable backup and should be a good spot-start tonight vs. the Sabres.

The Penguins have reassigned Jeff Zatkoff to Wilkes-Barre Scranton (AHL).

Zatkoff heads back to the AHL where he ranks fourth in the league in GAA (1.85) and 10th in SV% (.925) while posting a 10-6-1 record. His return to the minors means that Thomas Greiss is set to return after missing time with the mumps.

Penguins net minder Thomas Greiss tested positive for mumps on Friday, so Zatkoff has been recalled to serve as Marc-Andre Fleury’s backup until Greiss is set to return.
