Irwin has been a mainstay on the Predators blueline this season, appearing in 24 of 26 games but he will come out of the lineup tonight with Yannick Weber (lower-body) set to return from injury.
Irwin has been in the lineup for all nine games this season, but it looks like he will be scratched tonight with Samuel Girard getting back in. Irwin has been held pointless with 11 shots while averaging 14:05 TOI/GM.
The Predators have been battling food poisoning, so they’ve recalled Irwin to serve as a seventh defenseman on their upcoming road-trip. The 28-year-old defenseman has one assist in four AHL games this season and 51 points (16G / 25A) in 155 career NHL games with the Sharks and the Bruins.
Irwin, 28, was a player with 153 games of NHL experience heading into last season, but he was never able to maintain a roster spot with the Bruins, spending 64 games with Providence (AHL). During his season with Providence, Irwin collected 30 points (5G / 25A) but will likely start 2016-17 with Milwaukee (AHL).
Irwin struggled through his first two games with the Bruins which prompted them to waive him. He cleared waivers and with Zdeno Chara ready to return today, the Bruins sent Irwin back to Providence.
Irwin signed a one-year deal with the Bruins this offseason but has struggled through the first two games of the season. Irwin is a minus-5 while averaging 14:56 TOI. It wouldn’t be surprising if Irwin is claimed by another team--he had 19 points (8G / 11A) in 53 games with San Jose last year.
Irwin missed Sunday’s practice and will not play on Monday. He will take part in the morning skate, but will still be held out of the lineup.
Irwin suffered an upper-body injury in practice yesterday and it will keep him out of tonight’s game vs. the Canucks. Irwin will be replaced by Scott Hannan. Consider Irwin day-to-day.
Irwin reportedly tweaked something while taking a shot at today’s practice. He was taken off of the ice as a precaution and will receive some treatment this afternoon. His status is uncertain for Saturday, so monitor his status tomorrow morning.
A healthy scratch for the last six games, Sharks defenseman Matt Irwin will return to the lineup against the Kings on Wednesday. “It’s just time to get him playing again. He shoots the puck a lot, he gives the power play a bit of a pop, and he’ll get that opportunity,” head coach Todd McLellan said. Irwin will be paired with Dan Boyle, while Justin Braun and Marc-Edouard Vlasic will reunite. The third pair will be Brad Stuart and Scott Hannan.
This will be the fourth time in the last five game that Irwin has been scratched since Dan Boyle has returned to the Sharks blueline. He has three assists in 14 games this season.
Not confirmed yet but Irwin could draw back into the lineup.
This season, Irwin has played in 26 games with the Sharks, registering nine points (five goals, four assists) and four penalty minutes.
Irwin is still looking to make his NHL debut.
Irwin will not make his NHL debut tonight as he continues to learn the system.
Irwin could draw in for the veteran Colin White, who typically doesn't play in back-to-back games.
