You could argue that Sharp is one of the most important fantasy hockey players considering he qualifies for all three forward positions.

"I'm sure they'll come haul me off the ice if they have to," he said. "If it was necessary, I'd leave the game and support the wife. I don't want to miss any games, but I think I have to in this situation."

Sharp is currently expecting his first born child and could miss a game or two for paternity leave. Check back for a further update on his status.

Sharp, who underwent an emergency appendectomy Sept. 12, has been skating by himself this week but took a big step in his recovery when he joined practice at the United Center.

Sharp returning the lineup is a welcome addition with the injuries to Ben Smith and Viktor Stalberg. Last season he scored 34 goals and 71 points while centering the second line and manning the point on the PP. Expect similar results and for the versatile forward to only possibly miss the first week of the season.

"(Sharp's) progressing," coach Joel Quenneville said. "I think he’s feleing good. He was out there a little bit (Sunday) and will do the same (Monday) and (Tuesday) and we’ll get a better indication after that how close he is to jumping on with us."

Sharp remains a possibility for opening night but likely returns shortly after. The versatile forward scored 34 goals and 71 points last season with the Chicago Blackhawks. Expect him to come near those totals, as he is expected to flank Jonathan Toews on the top line.

Patrick Sharp spoke for the first time since his emergency appendectomy, telling the Blackhawks faithful at the United Center he's hoping to be ready for opening night.

Sharp is coming off an emergency appendectomy which should only really affect his strength. The typical recovery is about a month so expect him to miss the opener despite this optimistic write-up.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp will miss the bulk of training camp after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Monday night.

Coming off a career high 34 goals and 71 points, Sharp will need to recover quickly in order to match those totals this season. Appendectomies, while scary, have not been known to hinder hockey players once back to full strength, so take a sigh of relief long-term owners.
