Sam Gagner News
Gagner will shift to the wing and play on the Oilers top line tonight.

Gagner will skate with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Taylor Hall against the Penguins tonight. After a breakout year in 2012-13 (14G / 24A), Gagner has taken a step back this season. He has recorded 17 points (5G / 12A) with a terrible minus-17 in 33 games. That puts him on pace for a career-low 36 points, which is two lower than he had in last years shortened campaign.

Gagner's recovery appears to be ahead of schedule. He should be back before early November, but consider him week-to-week until the Oilers announce otherwise.

Sam Gagner skated with his Oilers teammates today for the first time since breaking his jaw in mid-September. He was wearing a face shield to protect his jaw.

The original timetable for Gagner's return was November, but he appears to be ahead of schedule. The Oilers got word that they will get Ryan Nugent-Hopkins back today which allows them to ease Gagner back in.

Sam Gagner is out indefinitely after he suffered a broken jaw Saturday night on a high stick from Vancouver Canucks forward Zack Kassian.

Gagner, 24, scored 14 goals and 24 assists in the lockout-shortened 48-game regular-season last year. The London, Ont., native has 91 goals and 167 assists in 414 career contests, all with Edmonton. He could be a late round steal if you can hold onto him while he is out for the first month or so.

Sam Gagner and the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension, the team announced Monday. Gagner's new contract will reportedly pay him an average of $4.8 million US per season. The deal allows the 23-year-old centre and the Oilers to avoid a salary-arbitration hearing that was scheduled for later in the day. Gagner, who made $2.275 million last season, reportedly was asking for $5.5 million a year, with Edmonton offering $3.5 million.

Gagner was picked sixth overall by the Oilers in the 2007 NHL draft. He had 14 goals and 24 assists in 48 games last season, for an average of 0.79 points per game. In his previous five NHL seasons he averaged 15 goals, 29 assists and 73 games played, for an average of 0.60 points per game.

With 8 points tonight, Sam Gagner also ties a Oilers franchise record, done once by Paul Coffey and twice by Wayne Gretzky.

A pretty remarkable display by Gagner but we don't expect him to turn into Gretzky or Coffey this season. The 8 point night gives him 30 on the season and 10 in his last 10 games.
