Sergei Gonchar News
Gonchar suffered upper body injury and won't return in 3rd period tonight.

Losing Gonchar is a big blow to the team's power play as he has 9 PP on the season. Look for Matt Carkner to take his place in the lineup and for rookie David Rundblad to get a long look as his replacement should he miss any playing time.

Sergei Gonchar (ankle) is practising with the Senators as we speak. Might he return for Thursday's game vs Jets? Yes. He might. #nhl #sens

Gonchar's return to the lineup should be greeted with mixed feelings in Ottawa.. Through five games this season he posted two assists with a minus-3 rating. Look for Brian Lee or David Rundblad to draw out.

Defenceman Sergei Gonchar left after the first period after getting hit in the foot by a slap shot. The seriousness of the injury isn’t yet known. He’s day-to-day.

Perhaps Gonchar's injury is a blessing in disguise for the Sens. Through five games this season he posted two assists with a minus-3 rating. Look for Brian Lee to step back into the lineup.

It that keeps up for all this season and next, through the end of Gonchar’s contract here, it’s certain to become wearing.

Gonchar continues to be the scapegoat in Ottawa, just one season into his contract. While he scored seven goals and 27 points in 67 games last season, his minus-15 rating and poor defensive play doesn't translate into fantasy or real hockey.

Sergei Gonchar
Gonchar freely acknowledges he had a terrible 2010-11 season, along with the rest of the team. After signing a three-year, $15.5 million contract as a free agent, he never found his feet, finishing the year with seven goals and 20 assists. With the exception of 2008-09, when he played only 25 games due to injuries, it was his lowest offensive output since 1997-98 season with Washington.

With a new defensive partner and a new coach, Gonchar could return to respectability in Ottawa. His 11 goals over 62 games just two seasons ago indicate he has some offense left in the tank. Nevertheless, expect him to play a mentor role to Jared Cowen and David Rundblad.
