Defenseman Simon Despres, a first-round draft pick in 2009, was among the first 13 training camp roster cuts made today by the Penguins. Despres, a first-year pro, was sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.
The former 30th overall pick must need more seasoning. Despres scored 13 goals and 41 points through 47 games with the Memorial Cup winning St. John Sea Dogs. His demotion speaks more to the depth of the big club opposed to his current skill level.
