So why would McLellan pick this game, facing the high-powered Red Wing offense, to test the Demers-Braun combination?

Demers figures to return to the lineup tonight against the offense-heavy Red Wings. Through his first five games he registered two assists with the club. Expect him to play a better two-way game upon his return.

Mike Smith is expected to start in goal for the Coyotes, who have been held to four goals during a three-game losing streak at home. Smith has played well during the skid; he has a 1.64 goals-against average in his last three home starts.

Over three career starts against the Devils, Smith holds a 1-0-2 record with a 2.53 GAA and .925 SV%.

For example, among the last players on the ice were Torrey Mitchell, Jason Demers and Colin White. Half their teammates were back at the hotel before they came off.

Look for Demers to be a healthy scratch for the second consecutive game. Through five games this season, the Dorval, Quebec produced two assists with a minus-4 rating.

Nashville Coach Barry Trotz slightly backed off his hard stance on rookie defenseman Mattias Ekholm. One day earlier, Trotz said Ekholm was “absolutely horrible” against the Canucks. “He’s going to be a really good player, let’s get that straight,” Trotz said Friday. “He’s not a bad defenseman, he’s going to be a real good one, but he has to learn the North American game and adjust.”

Although coach Trotz hedged on his earlier comments regarding Ekholm, it likely means he draws out of the lineup the next time the Preds hit the ice. For the most part, the Swedish defender remains on the roster because of his options overseas. Jack Hillen probably becomes the sixth defenseman as Ekholm gets his feet wet in a smaller rink.

The 20-year-old Jets forward had three games he’d rather forget to kick off the season and suffered a lower-body injury blocking a shot in Phoenix on Saturday that kept him out of Monday’s 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Kane likely draws in for Brett MacLean. Through his first three games in a Jets uniform, the former fourth overall pick was snake-bitten with 12 SOG, no points and a minus-2 rating. Look for him to improve with some much needed rest.

There’s a possibility that Trotz could insert rookie defenseman Mattias Ekholm into the lineup for Thursday’s home opener. Ekholm was unavailable for Saturday’s game against St. Louis after catching the flu Friday.

Ekblom could fill in for Teemu Laakso on the blue line tonight. Last season he scored 10 goals and 33 points through 55 games with Brynas IF Gavle of the SEL. He could boost the team's offense from the third defensive pairing.

“I just wanted a little bit more out of him,” Noel said. “I don’t equate an A game with only shots and only hits. I equate it with performance, like with everybody. So I would’ve liked his performance to be better, but I could’ve missed shifts with a lot of guys.

Kane contributed at both ends of the ice on Sunday but failed to show up on the box score. Last season he scored 19 goals and 43 points through 73 games with the now-defunct Atlanta Thrashers. Expect him to improve on last season's totals.

Evander Kane was moved to the third line with Alex Burmistrov and Nik Antropov.

Kane should play much better on a scoring line after toiling on the 'second line' with rookie Mark Scheifele and Kyle Wellwood. Last season he scored 19 goals and 43 points through 73 games with the now-defunct Atlanta Thrashers. In his first game, he seemed somewhat out-of-place, getting held scoreless with a minus-1 rating.
