Bernier is the Maple Leafs' likely starter on Monday.

Bernier allowed four goals on 32 shots in the Maple Leafs loss to the Penguins on Saturday. Bernier has lost all seven of his starts while posting a 3.02 GAA and .899 SV%. It has been a very difficult start to the season for the Maple Leafs, but it looks as if head coach Mike Babcock will use Bernier as a clear-cut No. 1 starter. This will be his sixth start in seven games.

Bernier will start again Saturday vs. the Penguins.

Bernier stopped 23 of 25 shots in the Maple Leafs 3-1 loss in New York last night. Mike Babcock called it Bernier’s best game of the season, which is why he gets the call again tonight vs. his former teammate Phil Kessel and the Penguins. Bernier stopped 31 of 33 shots in a 2-1 loss in his first start against the Penguins this season (Oct 17th.)

Bernier gets the nod on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

Bernier was pulled in his last start after allowing three goals on nine shots against the Red Wings. James Reimer started the last two games after Bernier allowed five goals on the first 37 shots (.865 SV%) that he faced this season. Bernier will start on Friday vs. the Red Wings.

Bernier had a rough start to 2015-16, allowing the first shot that he faced to trickle across the goal line. After that he settled in, stopping a total of 27 shots on the night in a 3-1 loss to the Canadiens. The Maple Leafs didn’t actually look too bad, but they will be in tough again on Friday as they face a young, talented Red Wings squad.

Jonathan Bernier
Markstrom will not dress on Wednesday due to a lower-body injury.

Markstrom tweaked a lower-body injury in Tuesday’s practice and is unable to suit up as Ryan Miller’s backup tonight. Markstrom will be evaluated later today to determine the severity of the injury and how much time he will miss. Richard Bachman has been recalled to serve as the backup.

Bernier will star the Maple Leafs' season opener on Wednesday.

Despite being slightly outplayed by James Reimer in the preseason, Mike Babcock will roll Bernier out in his Leafs’ coaching debut on Wednesday. Bernier was winless against the Habs last season, going 0-2-2 with 2.67 GAA and .908 SV%. With Babcock behind the bench, things may tighten up defensively, but Bernier doesn’t appear as if he will be in line to win too many games this season.
