The Vancouver Canucks inked right winger Linus Karlsson to a new contract on Friday, securing him for the 2025-26 season.

The 25-year-old Swedish forward will remain with the Canucks on a one-year, one-way contract worth $775,000 and look to further establish himself at the NHL level. Last summer, he signed a one-year, two-way deal, which made his new contract a promotion despite having the same AAV.

Through 2024-25, he has spent most of the year with the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks, posting 19 goals and 32 points in 28 games, while becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer with 141 points, ahead of second-place Arshdeep Bains with 122.

He also has the most goals in Abbotsford Canucks history with 66.

He’s also played nine NHL games this season, scoring his first NHL goal in a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators in January. Previously, he made his NHL debut with Vancouver, playing four games in 2023-24 and skated in two Stanley Cup Playoff games.

“Linus has worked very hard on his development the past few seasons in Abbotsford and has also shown he can compete at the NHL level,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said in a news release. “He has good size and hands around the net, and we really like the way he competes on the ice.”

Originally selected 87th overall in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks, the native of Eksjo, Sweden has been in the Canucks system since being acquired in a 2019 trade which sent Jonathan Dahlen the other way.

Despite a tumultuous season with Elias Pettersson’s struggles, Quinn Hughes’ injuries and dealing away J.T. Miller, the Canucks remain in the hunt for a Stanley Cup Playoff spot, even at 71 points with the Calgary Flames, who hold the final spot in the Western Conference Wild Card standings.

The Canucks face the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night.
