Rodin, 26, has appeared in three games with Utica this season, recording two assists. Rodin has been limited over the past few seasons by knee injuries, but he looks healthy again. The Swedish winger has only appeared in three NHL games and his last full season was in Sweden—where he had 16 goals and 21 assists (37 points) in 33 games with Brynas IF Gavle.
In January 2016 Rodin was sidelined indefinitely after suffering a knee injury and re-aggravated the same injury last season, limiting him to just six total games. Rodin has a lot of offensive upside, having posted a combined 47 goals and 65 assists (112 points) in 134 games in Sweden before coming to North America last year. If his rehab goes well and he can stay healthy next year, he has the chance to make a fantasy impact.
The Canucks released the following statement on Rodin this afternoon: “On January 6th vs. Calgary, [Rodin] fell on and re-aggravated the same knee he rehabilitated from surgery (skate cut) in January 2016. After a period of observation, his knee hasn’t returned to the same level of fitness as before the fall. Our [medical team] and [Rodin] have determined it is in his best interest to undergo a period of rest, followed by rehab, until his knee strength and function return. [Rodin] will undergo an MRI and orthopaedic consult this week.”
Rodin is dealing with swelling and strength issues in his knee that required surgery back in January. Rodin had a strong preseason, scoring two goals with three assists (five points) but the Canucks feel he would benefit from being placed on LTIR and getting to 100 percent.
