Smith, 27, was acquired via trade from San Jose on February 27. He has split this season between the Sharks and Barracuda. The Avon, Connecticut native has skated in six games with the Sharks this season. In 14 games with the Barracuda, he has collected 10 points (eight goals, two assists). In 181 NHL games between San Jose and the Chicago Blackhawks, Smith has recorded 25 goals and 19 assists for 44 career points.
Smith was acquired from the Blackhawks last season, but only appeared in 19 games with the Sharks last season and six this season. He has picked up 10 points (8G / 2A) in 14 games with the Barracuda (AHL) and was likely only a part of the trade for salary purposes.
Smith cleared waivers on Thursday and has been sent to San Jose (AHL) this afternoon. Smith had no points and averaged just 5:59 TOI in six games with the Sharks this season.
Smith will play in his first NHL game since October 31st. He was out with an injury, then was with San Jose (AHL) on a conditioning stint and now will replace Joel Ward in the lineup tonight. Prior to getting hurt he had no points and a minus-1 rating in four games.

Smith will skate on the Hawks third line with Brandon Saad and Andrew Shaw. He had a goal in his only game with Chicago last season and also netted 27 with 20 assists (47 points) in 54 games with the Rockford IceHogs (AHL).
