Schnieder did not see any action with the Islanders in his call-up and will head back to Bridgeport (AHL) where he was 10-3-2 prior to his promotion with a 2.51 GAA and .921 SV%.
Schneider's recall suggests that Ilya Sorokin (upper-body) will not be available for Tuesday's game. Schneider, who has gone 10-10-3 with a 2.68 GAA and .921 SV% in 24 AHL games this season, will serve as Semyon Varlamov's backup.
Semyon Varlamov landed in COVID-19 protocol on Saturday, so Schneider has been recalled to serve as Ilya Sorokin's backup on Tuesday. Schneider has gone 5-9-2 with a 3.08 GAA and .906 SV% in 16 AHL games this season.
Schneider will remain on the Islanders' active roster and serve as their No.3 netminder behind Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin. Last year he was 3-6-2 with a 3.53 GAA and .887 SV% in 13 games with the Devils.
Schneider had two years left on his seven-year, $42.0M deal that he signed back in 2014. The buyout will cost the Devils $2.0M in cap space for each of the next four seasons but provides them with $4.0M in savings in 2021 and 2022. Over the last three seasons, Schneider ranked 45th in GAA (3.07) and 47th in SV% (.903) among the 50 qualified netminders (Min.75 starts).
Blackwood allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Devils loss in Vegas on Tuesday. Since the start of February, Blackwood has gone 6-1-1 while leading the NHL in GAA (1.48) and SV% (.961). Against the Rangers this year, Blackhawks has gone 1-2-0 while giving up 10 goals on 78 shots (.872 SV%).
Schneider allowed one goal on 28 shots in the Devils win in Detroit on Tuesday. The win moved Schneider to 1-5-0 with a 3.55 GAA and .889 SV% in seven road appearances (five starts) in 2020. Tonight he will go for back-to-back wins for the first time since February 17th/21st, 2019. He'll face a Sharks team that has lost five in a row while scoring just 1.80 goals per game.
Tonight will be Schneider's first start since January 18th. He was pulled after giving up four goals on 17 shots in the Devils 5-0 loss in Columbus. Schneider is still looking for his first win of the season, going 0-6-1 with a 4.65 GAA and .852 SV% thus far. With that said, if he's going to get a win, his best chance would be tonight against the league's worst team.
Schneider allowed three goals on 23 shots after replacing Louis Domingue in the Devils loss in Washington on Thursday. Since coming up from the AHL, he's made two relief appearances, stopping 33 of the 37 shots (.892 SV%) that he has faced. Tonight he makes his first NHL start since November 8th and comes in at 0-5-1 with a 4.42 GAA and .859 SV% on the year.
With Mackenzie Blackwood hurt and Louis Domingue starting last night, it's entirely possible that Schneider will start tonight vs. the Lightning. However, Domingue played well last night, it is his former team in town and the guy who stole his job is probably starting, so it could be Domingue on back-to-back nights. Schneider has had a tough time in the AHL so far, going 4-4-0 with a 3.00 GAA and .894 SV% in eight starts.
Schneider still has three years left on a contract that carries a $6.0M AAV cap-hit so it's not surprising that he cleared waivers. Schneider's game has completely fallen apart in recent years, as he's gone 6-27-7 with league worsts in GAA (3.55) and SV% (.885) in his last 44 appearances. Unless he goes to Binghamton and completely reinvents himself, this could be the last we see of Cory Schneider.
Schneider surrendered seven goals on 23 shots in the Devils loss to the Lightning on October 30th. Mackenzie Blackwood has started the last four games but Schneider will get a chance to get back in the crease on the tail-end of a back-to-back in Western Canada. The 33-year-old is still looking for his first win of the season, going 0-3-1 with an ugly 4.71 GAA and .847 SV% in his first five starts.
Schneider allowed six goals on 34 shots in the Devils loss to the Panthers on October 14th. The Devils have had a weird schedule as of late and MacKenzie Blackwood has started the last three games, so Schneider will make his first start in over two weeks. He is 0-3-0 with a 4.08 GAA and .876 SV% in four starts this season, so stay far away against the Lightning--even though they played last night and could be without three regulars.
Schneider allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Devils loss in Boston on Saturday. Today will be the first time that a Devils goalie has starts two games in a row and Schneider comes in searching for his first win of the season. He has allowed a combined nine goals on 87 shots (.897 SV%). He’ll face a Panthers team that has stumbled out of the gate, going 1-2-2 while averaging just 2.60 goals per game.
Schneider allowed four goals on 34 shots in the Devils loss in Philadelphia on Wednesday. The Devils are still looking for their first win on the season and it seems unlikely that it will come Saturday in Boston. Schneider is 2-11-1 in his last 13 road starts, so steer clear of him tonight.
Schneider allowed two goals on 21 shots before leaving the Devils season opener with lower-body cramping. MacKenzie Blackwood ended up blowing the lead in that game and giving up seven goals in Buffalo, so they’ll come back to Schneider tonight in Philadelphia. Schneider was an ugly 2-10-1 with a 3.68 GAA and .889 SV% on the road last year.
