Daniel Winnik News
The Wild signed Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal worth $660K.

Winnik is expected to make his Wild debut on Thursday after earning a contract on a PTO during training camp. Winnik is coming off of a year in which he had 12 goals and 13 assists (25 points) in 72 games with the Capitals. Look for him to skate with Matt Cullen and Tyler Ennis on the Wild fourth line in his debut.

Winnik has been cleared to practice with the Penguins on Saturday.

Winnik, who was recently acquired via trade from Toronto, had his Visa issue worked out and he will be in practice on Saturday. Tomorrow’s practice will give us a better idea of who he will play with and who will be a healthy scratch on Sunday.

The Leafs have traded Daniel Winnik to the Penguins for a 2016 2nd round pick, a 2015 4th round pick and Zach Sill.

Winnik, 29, is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He has scored 25 points (7G / 18A) in 58 games with the Maple Leafs this season. The Penguins are strapped up against the cap, which is why the Maple Leafs took on Sill’s salary as well as retained 50% of Winnik’s salary for the remainder of the season. Winnik is a versatile forward who works hard in both ends of the rink.

Winnik (neck) practiced with the Maple Leafs on Tuesday.

Winnik missed the last two games with a neck injury that he suffered last Thursday. He was back at practice on Tuesday, skating on a line with David Clarkson and Nazem Kadri, which is a good sign for his availability on Wednesday vs. the Bruins.

Winnik (neck) is not on the ice for the Maple Leafs morning skate.

Winnik had to be stretchered off of the ice on Thursday, so it would not be surprising to see him sit out on Saturday. He reportedly was feeling fine after Thursday’s game, but I would still look for him to sit tonight. He was playing on the top line, so that someone else will get a chance to play with Phil Kessel and Nazem Kadri tonight.

Winnik says he is “100% fine” after being stretchered off of the ice on Thursday.

Winnik was knocked out in an awkward collision that had him land on the back of his neck. He was out cold on the ice and had to be stretchered off, but he was reportedly up and talking to teammates following the game and is doing well. I would not expect to see him in the lineup on Saturday vs. the Rangers, but you never know.

The Maple Leafs have signed Daniel Winnik to a one-year deal.

Winnik, 29, spent the last two seasons in Anaheim where he totalled 12 goals and 37 assists (49 points) in 124 games. Winnik is a solid bottom-6 forward that will make the Maple Leafs more difficult to play against. They spend the last few seasons with fighters on their fourth line, but this offseason they have inked a number of role players that bring more to the table than fighting.
