With Torey Krug missing the morning skate with an illness, the Bruins have recalled Morrow as insurance incase Krug can’t play. Morrow has one goal in 15 games with the Bruins this season—while in Providence he has registered eight points (3G / 5A) in 27 games.

Morrow, 21, was recalled when Zdeno Chara originally got injured, but was sent back to Providence when Zach Trotman played well on Saturday vs. the Leafs. The B's bluleine struggled on Tuesday night, so they have recalled Morrow to give him a shot. He was a part of the Tyler Seguin trade and has scored one goal with one assists in five games with Providence.

Morrow, 21, was the 23rd overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft. Morrow was acquired by the Bruins in the Tyler Seguin trade, but he has yet to make an NHL appearance. That is about to change after Zdeno Chara went down with a knee injury on Thursday. Morrow is a big body defenseman who is a good passer with a big shot. He will battle fellow call-up Zach Trotman for playing time while Chara is out.

Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today, July 4, that the club has acquired forwards Loui Eriksson, Matt Fraser, Reilly Smith and defenseman Joe Morrow from the Dallas Stars in exchange for forwards Rich Peverley, Tyler Seguin and defenseman Ryan Button.

Morrow is a highly touted D prospect and could find himself being a solid fantasy contributor a few years down the road.

"Right now, we don't have Brooks Orpik (abdominal) on the ice, so there is opportunity that wasn't there before," coach Dan Bylsma said. "That opportunity may be there at the start of the season. ... (Morrow) is getting an opportunity because of his play, for what he's done on the ice and also because we have players that haven't been able to participate in games and some of the training camp."

Morrow has been practicing on the top pairing alongside Kris Letang and could provide the Pens with another puck-moving defenseman. Last season he led the Portland Winterhawks defenders with nine goals and 49 points. Look for him to stick on a nine-game tryout.

Among the intriguing storylines for the Penguins going into their final cuts early next week is 1st rounder Joe Morrow who again today was used in a top pairing role with defenseman Kris Letang. What has been so impressive with Morrow is how consistent he’s been throughout camp from practices to games.

Morrow received a longer look than highly touted prospect Simon Despres. Last season he led the Portland Winterhawks defenders with nine goals and 49 points. While he remains a longshot to make the team, his presence in camp shows how high the team is on him.

Defenseman Joe Morrow, the club's first-round pick in this year's draft, survived the first cut after having a strong exhibition game Wednesday against Detroit.

Morrow likely gets a longer look as one of the team's top prospects. He scored nine goals and 49 points through 60 games with the Portland Winter Hawks last season. Expect him to return to Juniors for at least one more season.
