Bernier went 4-4-1 with a .902 SV% and 3.06 GAA through 10 games with New Jersey in 2022-23 and has called it a career Monday after 14 NHL seasons. The 35-year-old goaltender was drafted in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft's 1st round (11th overall) and went on to play for six different teams (LAK, TOR, DET, ANA, COL, NJD) picking up a 165-163-40 record, 2.78 GAA, and .912 SV%.
It's unclear when Bernier suffered a lower-body injury, as he has not started since December 3rd. Akira Schmid was recalled from Utica (AHL) to take Bernier's spot on the roster for Friday's game.
Bernier will miss tonight's game vs. the Capitals, leaving Scott Wedgewood to start and Nico Daws to serve as his backup after being called up from Utica (AHL).
Bernier stopped 24 of 27 shots in the Devils win over the Blackhawks in their season opener. With Mackenzie Blackwood (heel) still out, Bernier will start his second straight game on Tuesday. Tonight he'll face a Kraken team that is coming off of a blowout loss in Philadelphia last night and are playing their third game in four nights.
With Mackenzie Blackwood (heel) not available, Bernier will make his Devils debut in their season opener vs. Chicago. Bernier spent the last three seasons in Detroit, where he had a 3.02 GAA and .908 across 94 starts. The Blackhawks lost 4-2 in their season opener in Colorado.

Bernier enjoyed a solid 2020-21 campaign, going 9-11-1 with a 2.99 GAA and .914 SV%. Those numbers aren't eye-popping but they were the best of his three-year tenure in Detroit. He is pending UFA, so could hit the open market on July 28th but the Hurricanes will have a few days to try and sign him to a team-friendly deal.
