John Gibson struggled in the Ducks’ season opener and has struggled in his last two starts vs. Pittsburgh, so they will turn to Bernier tonight. Bernier was acquired from the Maple Leafs this offseason and is coming off of a dreadful year—he was 12-21-3 with a 2.88 GAA and .908 SV%. The 28-year-old will look to have a bounce-back year in Anaheim, but it will be tough to get off to a good start tonight in Pittsburgh.

The Ducks have acquired Jonathan Bernier from the Maple Leafs for a conditional draft pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Bernier, 27, was originally acquired from the Kings to be the goalie of the future in Toronto, but that never really panned out. Bernier was 59-68-17 with a 2.80 GAA and .915 SV% in 140 starts and 11 relief appearances with the Maple Leafs over three seasons. This summer the Leafs brought in Frederik Andersen from Anaheim to be their new starter, now Bernier is headed the other way to serve as John Gibson’s backup.

March has been his best month of the season by far—so far he is 3-4-0 with a 1.90 GAA and .937 SV%. One of those losses came against the Panthers, he allowed two goals on 30 shots in a 4-1 loss on March 17th.

Bernier stopped 23 of 25 shots in the Maple Leafs win over the Flames on Monday. Garret Sparks got the call on Thursday, so they’ll come back with Bernier tonight vs. the Bruins. Bernier has won three of his last four starts while posting a 1.27 GAA, .958 SV% and one shutout. Bernier has heated up and tonight he faces a Bruins team that has lost five consecutive games.

He has struggled all year and things aren’t going to get better as the Maple Leafs approach the trade deadline and continue to dismantle their roster.
