The Rangers announced Thursday that Marc Staal would be joining the team as a Player Development Assistant drawing an end to the 37-year-old's 17-year NHL playing career. The stay-at-home defender joined the NHL with New York in 2007-08 and ended up representing four different organizations (NYR, DET, FLA, PHI) across his impressive 1136-game career. He spent 2023-24 with Philadelphia and added five points in 35 games played to his 53 goals and 234 career points.
Staal somehow managed an even plus/minus in Philadelphia's 9-3 loss to Montreal on Tuesday but will be the odd man out of the lineup on Thursday as Egor Zamula returns. The 37-year-old veteran defenseman has had a season to forget in his first year in Philadelphia, with a goal and five points, 14 PIMs, 20 SOG and a +2 plus/minus in 35 games played.
Staal has only appeared in one game since March 16th but will make another appearance on Tuesday as he replaced Ronnie Attard vs. Montreal. The 37-year-old may finally be showing signs of aging as he has his lowest point output since 2011-12 with his one goal and five points in 34 games played this season.
Staal will make his first appearance since March 16th when the Flyers travel to Buffalo on Friday. Yegor Zamula will sit in his place.
Staal joins a group of notable veteran healthy scratches for the Flyers including Cam Atkinson and team captain, Sean Couturier. Staal played only 9:09 time-on-ice in the Flyers' last contest, recording a -1 plus/minus.
Staal will enter the lineup in place of Rasmus Ristolainen (upper-body). Staal has one goal and one assist in 18 games this season.
Staal is on the ice for warmups and will likely draw in for Ramus Ristolainen, who is listed as a scratch. Staal has one goal and one assist in 17 games this season.
Staal returned to the Flyers' lineup from a four-game absence on Saturday, playing 12:09 time-on-ice and recording one shot on goal. He will watch the game from the press box as a healthy scratch on Monday, a familiar role for Staal this season.
Staal will make his first appearance since December 21st as the Flyers opt to dress seven defensemen against the Oilers. He has no goals and one assist in 14 games this season.
The Marc Staal/Egor Zamula lineup carousel continues Friday as Staal will be a healthy scratch in Detroit as he continues to appear in every other game. The 36-year-old veteran defenceman has struggled this season, with an assist, four SOG, and eight PIMs in 14 games played thus far.
Egor Zamula will be a healthy scratch on Thursday, allowing Staal to draw back into the lineup. The veteran Staal played 17:12 in his last contest, well above his season average of 13:56, recording two hits and blocking one shot in the process.
Staal will retake his place in the lineup on Thursday after sittoung out Tuesday's overtime loss to the Predators. The veteran blue-liner is yet to register a point across 11 appearances this season.
Staal was a healthy scratch for the Flyers previous game but will continue his carousel of playing by stepping back into Phildaelphia's lineup Thursday vs. Washington instead of Egor Zamula. The 36-year-old Staal is in his 17th NHL season and has yet to pick up a point in 11 games played while amassing six PIMs and three SOG.
Staal will be a healthy scratch on Tuesday, the third time in the last six games, allowing Ryan Poehling (illness) to draw back into the lineup. Staal has been ineffective when called upon this season, averaging a career-low 13:33 time-on-ice and zero points through 11 games.
