The Senators have signed Matt Murray to a four-year deal worth $25.0 million ($6.25M AAV).

Murray was acquired from the Penguins on Wednesday and signed a four-year extension this afternoon. The signing makes Murray the seventh-highest paid goalie in the NHL for the 2021 season. Last year, Murray was tied for 34th in GAA (2.87) and tied for 45th in SV% (.899 SV%), so he has a lot of work to do to earn this contract.

The Senators have acquired Matt Murray from the Penguins for Jonathan Gruden and a 2020 second-round pick (No.52 overall).

The Penguins made their decision in net when they locked up Tristan Jarry last week. With so many free agent goalies becoming available on Friday it was a priority to get this trade done before then to maximize Murray's value. He is coming off of a down year, having posted a 2.87 GAA and .899 SV% in 38 starts but Murray is a huge upgrade in net for the Senators, who have improved drastically over the last 24 hours.

Murray allowed three goals on 35 shots in the Penguins' 3-2 overtime loss to the Canadiens in Game 1. Despite the loss, the Penguins will go right back to their more experienced netminder in Game 2. Dating back to the 2018 playoffs, Murray has lost seven straight playoff games, while posting a 2.89 GAA and .905 SV%.

Murray allowed five goals on 28 shots in the Penguins loss to the Capitals on Saturday. Murray has allowed at least three goals in five of his last six starts, going 2-4-0 with a 3.58 GAA and .866 SV% over that stretch. Tonight he'll face the Devils for the second time this season--he allowed two goals on 21 shots in a 2-1 loss back in mid-November.

Murray allowed two goals on 30 shots in the Penguins win in Buffalo on Thursday. Murray will make his third straight start this afternoon and comes in having won two straight while turning aside 51 of the 56 shots (.911 SV%) that he faced. Murray is 1-1-0 while allowing seven goals on 54 shots (.870 SV%) in his first two starts vs. the Capitals.

Murray allowed three goals on 26 shots in the Penguins win over the Senators on Tuesday. Murray has given up at least three goals in four straight games, going 1-3-0 with a 3.56 GAA and .859 SV%. Tonight he'll face the Sabres for the first time since the season opener, a night where he allowed three goals on 41 shots in a 3-1 loss.

With Tristan Jarry having a rough outing in San Jose on Saturday, Murray will draw a favourable matchup with the Senators in town. Murray has lost three straight while posting a 3.75 GAA and .849 SV% but Ottawa has lost 12 of their last 13 road games (1-7-5) while scoring just 2.08 goals per game.

Murray allowed four goals on 22 shots in the Penguins loss in Washington last Sunday. Murray has lost four of his last five starts while allowing 14 goals on on 146 shots (.904 SV%). Murray comes into Friday's game at 8-7-2 with a 3.08 GAA and .881 SV% on the road this season.

Murray allowed four goals on 30 shots in the Penguins 4-0 loss in Toronto on Thursday. With Tristan Jarry starting on Saturday, Murray gets set to face the Capitals for the second time this season. In his last four starts, Murray is 1-2-1 with a 2.48 GAA and .919 SV% and he stopped 29 of 32 shots in a 4-3 win in Washington on Super Bowl Sunday.

Murray allowed three goals on 32 shots in the Penguins win in Washington on Sunday. Murray has not lost a game since the Christmas break, going 6-0-0 with a 2.63 GAA and .922 SV% in his last six starts. He could have a tough time winning his seventh straight in Tampa Bay. The Lightning have won seven straight home games while averaging a whopping 4.86 goals per game.

Murray stopped 28 of 31 shots in the Lightning's win in Colorado last Friday. Tristan Jarry started the last three games, including last night, so Murray draws the favourable matchup tonight in Detroit. He's won three straight and the Red Wings should be grossly outmatched by his teammates.
