McNiven was an undrafted free agent out of the OHL, who has carved out a nice career in the AHL and ECHL to date. He will likely report to the AHL but provides the Flames with some organization depth. He has gone 4-4-1 with a 4.04 GAA and .869 SV% in 11 AHL games this season.
McNiven split 2020 between the ECHL and AHL and appears destined to start 2021 in the ECHL. He was 2-5-1 with a 4.16 GAA and .889 SV% in eight games with the Norfolk Admirals a season ago.
With Carey Price serving a one-game suspension for skipping the All-Star Game, McNiven has been called-up to serve as Antti Niemi’s backup on Saturday afternoon. The 21-year-old is 6-5-2 with a 2.38 GAA and .907 SV% in 16 AHL contests.
McNiven served as Antti Niemi’s backup for three games while Carey Price was out. With Price set to return on Thursday, McNiven heads back to Laval, where he has gone 4-4-1 with a 2.56 GAA and .884 SV%.
