The Bruins have recalled forward Nick Johnson from Providence on an emergency basis.

Johnson has 11 goals and nine assists (20 points) in 23 games with the Providence Bruins this seasons. He has played in 104 NHL games tallying 14 goals and 37 points with the Penguins, Wild and Coyotes. Daniel Paille is unable to play tonight so Johnson slides right into the lineup to make his Bruins debut.

Morning from Columbus -- afternoon here -- where the Wild has claimed PIttsburgh's Nick Johnson off waivers. He's a 25-year-old minor-league skilled guy who has shown checking ability in the NHL, especially this preseason.

Johnson was NHL ready but failed to make the team out of camp. Last season, the forward scored 20 goals and 39 points through 48 games while in the AHL. He could be a contributing third liner capable of scoring a few goals; Pens assistant coach Tony Granato essentially explained just that earlier in the week.

"We know he's going to play games with us this year," said Granato, the assistant coach who oversees the Penguins forwards. "Whether it's the first one or the 15th ... he's a guy who can play in our league."

Certainly lofty praise coming from the former NHLer Granato. The Calgary, Alberta native scored 20 goals and 39 points last season for the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins. Look for him to possibly fill in on a scoring line should the Pens have more injuries.
