Polak has opted out of the NHL's Return to Play.

Polak is one of six players that is opting out of the NHL playoffs due to family concerns. Polak had already signed with a team in the Czech Republic for next season and told the Czech media that he would not return if the NHL season resumed. Polak finished the 2020 season with four assists while playing 16:40 ATOI in 41 games.

Polak is set to miss his 18th straight game on Wednesday but he is "probable" to play Thursday in Vancouver. Polak had just nine points (1G / 8A) in 77 games with the Stars last year, so he brings little fantasy upside.

Polak had to be stretchered off of the ice after going head-first into the corner boards on Thursday and suffered a fractured sternum. Polak is expected to be sidelined long-term but the Stars will probably provide a more detailed timetable after he is re-evaluated next week.

Polak crashed head/shoulder first into the corner boards following a hit attempt and had to be stretchered off of the ice. Head coach Jim Montgomery told reporters post-game that Polak has full use of his extremities, which is great news but Polak will likely be sidelined long-term.

The Stars have signed Roman Polak to a one-year deal worth $1.75 million.

Polak had nine points (1G / 8A) in 77 games this season. Polak led the Stars in penalty minutes (69) and blocked shots (152)—which was good for 17th in the NHL. Polak became a reliable partner for rookie Miro Heiskanen, playing 43.3 percent of his 5v5 ice-time with Heisknanen.

Polak is a big bruising defenseman, who chips in offensively on occasion. He had just 12 points (2G / 10A) in 54 games with the Maple Leafs last season and signs with the Stars where he projects to be their No.6/No.7 defenseman.
