Calgary shored up its defensive depth on Tuesday as they signed Yan Kuznetsov to a one-year, two-way contract extension. The 22-year-old Russian defenseman was Calgary's 2020 2nd-round pick (50th overall) and made his NHL debut in 2023-24 but only appeared in one game. In 63 games played with the Calgary Wranglers (AHL) last season, he had five goals and 13 points.

Kuznetsov returns to the Wranglers after making just one appearance with the Flames. He has two goals and five assists in 31 AHL games this season.

Kuznetsov made his NHL debut on Tuesday but will be a healthy scratch on Thursday, allowing Jordan Oesterle to draw back into the lineup. In his debut, Kuznetsov recorded two shots on goal and a -1 plus/minus in 11:58 time-on-ice.

Kuznetsov was recalled last week but could not crack the Flames roster and immediately returned to the Wranglers (AHL), where he has seven points (2G / 5A) in 31 games this season. That said, the Flames defensive prospect will make his NHL debut at home on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators.
