DeSmith has had a solid season but has been terrible lately, losing three straight while allowing a combined 14 goals on 88 shots (.841 SV%). As bad as he’s played recently, he is a strong option vs. the visiting Senators.

The Penguins have signed Casey DeSmith to a three-year extension worth $3.75M ($1.25M AAV).

The undrafted 27-year-old netminder has gone 12-7-4 with a 2.47 GAA and .924 SV% in 26 games with the Penguins this season. DeSmith has played very well while Matt Murray was sidelined and proved that he is a more than capable No.2 netminder who can serve as a No.1 when called upon.

Duchene (personal) did not travel on the Senators three-game road trip.

Duchene and his wife are awaiting the arrival of their first child, so Duchene stayed home and is expected to miss all three games on their California road trip. Darren Archibald was called up to serve as the extra forward with Duchene out.

Benn (upper-body) will not play on Friday.

Benn was forced to leave Wednesday’s game vs. New Jersey with an upper-body injury that he suffered after being hit by Miles Wood. Benn was on the ice this morning and wanted to play but the coaching/training staff want him to recover more thoroughly. Valeri Nichushkin will move to the Stars’ top-line with Benn out.
