After losing four of five and losing playing time to Reto Berra, Varlamov turned in a stellar performance last night and will go again tonight in Carolina. Starting him on back-to-back nights is risky, but it is nice to see Varlamov turn things around, at least for one game.

He was terrible in his first three starts of the season, allowing a combined 13 goals on 82 shots (.841 SV%). He will look to turn things around tonight vs. a Hurricanes team who is 21st in the NHL, averaging 2.20 goals per game.

The Avs’ offence is clicking early on, now they need to lock it down defensively.
Schneider missed Monday’s practice and is not on the ice for the morning skate, which puts his status for tonight’s game in question. Schneider’s wife is expected to give birth very soon which is likely the reason for his absence. If he can’t start, expect Keith Kinkaid to get the nod.

However, paired with a goalie who will win a lot, Schneider is a great No. 2 option because he posts elite splits. He will start the season off at home, where he was 14-13-6 with a 1.87 GAA and .934 SV% last season.
Schneider returned to practice on Thursday after missing Wednesday’s session for “maintenance” reasons. It appears as if Schneider is on track to start the Devils’ season opener on Friday—in what should be the first of many starts for Schneider this season.
